About Dr. Laila Mintas

Dr. Mintas is a high-profile Executive and Thought Leader with 20+ years of experiences in the Sports- and Entertainment Industry on a global level with a proven track record of launching, restructuring and growing businesses in short time to a significant valuation. She has been involved in various roles as an Executive or Strategic Advisor in the Sports, Sports Betting & iGaming space.

Dr. Mintas has extensive and unique background and experience in the Sports Betting and iGaming space, having worked in many different key roles that gave her a 360-degree view on the industry:

– As lawyer at White&Case LLP in Germany, Dr. Mintas strategically advised i.e. in the areas of White-Collar Crime, Litigation, Sports Law and Compliance. She advised Sports Betting and iGaming companies in Europe about market entrance, regulatory frameworks and strategic positioning. As a Strategic Advisor, she advised companies globally about the market entrance into the US and Latin America.

– She wrote her Ph.D. about the German Sports Betting Monopoly in 2006 and came to the conclusion that it violates European Law. Shortly later, the European Court confirmed that the German Sports Betting Monopoly violates European Law which was the beginning for reformation of that German gambling market. Dr. Mintas’ Ph.D (The Legislation of Betting via the Internet) was tagged as outstanding by the well-known Humboldt-University of Berlin/Germany and quoted to this day by many courts and also by the relevant literature.

– As a representative of major Sports Organizations such as FIFA and CONCACAF where she managing all the Betting related topics such as Sponsorship, Data Exchange, Data Collection and Sports Integrity:

Dr. Mintas was leading the FIFA Interpol initiative where FIFA and Interpol together organized workshops in more than 200+ FIFA member associations around the globe to educate all stakeholders in Football about the threats of match manipulation. Dr. Mintas was actively involved in these workshops through presenting in different areas such as educating the audience about the need of national legal regulations, drafting and advising on sports regulations and policies, exchange of experiences, and good practice and good governance in the industry.

Later, Dr. Mintas was appointed the first Director of Sports Integrity at CONCACAF -The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football which is the continental governing body for association soccer in North America, Central America and the Caribbean region consisting of 41 member associations, including the US Soccer Federation and the Canadian Soccer Association. At CONCACAF, Dr. Mintas established the first ever Sports Integrity Unit in Football in the Americas. At this time, it was a quite unknown topic which effected mostly European Football in the Americas but several other sports around that globe as well.

Dr. Mintas created and developed new regulations, policies, procedures, and action protocols, including the CONCACAF Code of Ethics, which are still in place as of today. She created an integrity network of national integrity officers through third-party funding and made sure that every member association appointed one person as their single point of contact to deal with potential manipulation cases, which was a totally new approach. Under the lead of Dr. Mintas every Integrity Officer received tailored training by Interpol on how to tackle match manipulation in their region.

– As investor and Deputy President of Sportradar, the leading Sports Betting data company, valued at $2.4 Bn USD during her tenure. Responsible for the short way to profitability and aggressive growth of Sportradar US including P&L responsibility, product innovation and strategic acquisitions to grow the product portfolio for Sports Betting, iGaming and sports media products and definition of strategic goals for Sportradar US and also Sportradar AG (parent company) and synergy analysis between different global locations. During her tenure, she grew Sportradar US to a market share of over 85% in the US. She grew the company up to manage 500+ employees in 4 offices in the US. She managed the investor relationships that included i.a. Private Equity Investors, the NFL as well as VIP investors such as Michael Jordan, Ted Leonsis and Mark Cuban.

– As investor and Chairwoman of Bet.Works, a very innovative, omni-channel B2B Sports Betting and iGaming Platform (founded and sold to Bally´s for $125 mio USD within 24+ months).

– As CEO of PlayUp USA, a B2C Sports Betting, iGaming and Fantasy Sports Company that owns its proprietary wagering and fantasy platform, operates its in-house risk and trading team and operates also in Australia, New Zealand and India. Dr. Mintas created PlayUp USA from scratch with very limited resources to become a meaningful player in the market with significant market access in the US, an innovative and efficient Marketing Strategy and differentiating Product Strategy to gain meaningful market share. PlayUp was valued at a $450+ mio valuation in 2021 during Dr. Mintas tenure.

– As CEO of PlayEngine, an Award Winning, Silicon Valley-based B2B Sports Betting and iGaming software provider to licensed B2C gaming operators and media companies. In charge of fundraising and investor relations, P&L, overseeing the product innovation that includes Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning capabilities and transformed PlayEngine into the most automated and data-driven solutions in the market.

– Dr. Mintas serves as non-executive Director at SIS Ltd, headquartered in London, UK since 2021.

– Dr. Mintas has founded Dr. Mintas Consulting which has been involved in various deals as Strategic Advisor in the space.

Often described as a Veteran in the Sports Betting industry, Dr. Mintas has received for her Personal Achievements, the most prestigious awards and honors in the Sports and Sports Betting industry such as the Leaders in Sports U 40 Award, the SBJ Game Changers Award and the International Award for Women in the Gaming Industry – Inspiration of the Year 2018. She was named one of 25 Executives to watch in 2019 by the Global Gaming Business GBB magazine, selected as SBJ´s Power Player Sports Betting 2019 and Business Insider´s Leaders of the Sports Betting Industry 2019. Dr. Mintas has been actively involved in the Sports, Sports Betting and Entertainment space since 2006. She regularly gets invited as speaker on conferences around the world including Europe, Australia, North-, Central and South America and Asia. She published more than 100+ publications in the top academic and professional journals about Sports, Sports Betting and iGaming related subjects. She served as Guest Professor at several Universities such as Columbia University NYC, St John’s University NYC, University of New Hampshire and Humboldt University Berlin/Germany on topics such as Sports Betting, Sports Law and Sports Integrity.
